North Caucasus

Welcome to the North Caucasus, the true reserve of different cultures and languages! The region includes seven national republics: Dagestan, Chechnya, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Adygea, Kabardino Balkaria and Karachay Cherkessia. Traditionally, the territories of Krasnodar Krai and Stavropol Krai adjacent to the mountains are also included to the North Caucasus brand.

The Republic of Dagestan is the most multinational. It has 14 official languages and a lot of smaller ones. The landscapes there are also very diverse: from the coast of the Caspian Sea to mountainous forests and sand dunes. Be sure to visit the ancient fortress of Derbent which is the oldest city in Russia.

Chechen Republic is a land of beautiful mosques and mountainous landscapes. North Ossetia is the only Christian republic in North Caucasus with ancient temples and delicious cuisine. Together with the neighboring Ingushetia it is also known as a land of authentic to the Caucasus family stone towers. The main touristic attractions of Adygea are enigmatic ancient megaliths and the Caucasus Biosphere Reserve. Its territory is ideal for hiking tours. The republics of Kabardino Balkaria and Karachay Cherkessia share the mount Elbrus which is the highest peak of Caucasus. These are the lands of magnificent gorges, crystal clear lakes and scenic waterfalls.

Adjacent to the Caucasus mountains Stavropol Krai is famous for its balneological resorts with best mineral waters in Russia. And Krasnodar Krai is the main Russian sea resort with a long coast of the Black Sea and lush subtropical vegetation.

The North Caucasus is a big region with a lot of international airports. The most important of them are located in Makhachkala (Dagestan), Vladikavkaz (North Ossetia), Mineralnye Vody (Stavropol Krai) and Sochi (Krasnodar Krai). The most convenient way to travel between different republics is by car. You can make a grand tour around the whole region or explore some particular destination is details.

The North Caucasus is available all year around. During summer month you can amend your itinerary with a beach vacation at the Black or Caspian Seas. And those who prefer travelling in winter can spend a great time in world class ski resorts of Krasnodar Krai.
